salvatio Flashcards
Salvation
the belief that through Jesus’ death and resurrection, people can live forever with God.
What do Catholics believe about Jesus?
They believed that Jesus saved humans from the consequences of sin, which are a damaged relationship with God and the possibility of separating themselves from God’s love forever.
However, God sent his Son Jesus to live among humans to showw them how best to live through teachings like “love thy neighbour”
The death and resurrection of Jesus wre part of God’s plan to save his people.
Quote for salvation
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” - johns’s gospel
“the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world”
Redemption
Jesus paid the “ransom” to free humans from their sin, by dying on the cross.
What do humans need to do to be saved?
- repenting their sins and asking for God’s forgiveness and accepting Jesus as the Son of God.
- Key sacraments: baptism, confirmation, Eucharist.
Why is being saved important for Christians?
- without it, a person’s sin will stop them from having a relationship with God and that might mean hell or purgatory after death.
- The salvation of humankind was the purpose of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. God wants everyone to have a relationship with him, but it cannot be forced due to free will
Why do humans sin?
- free will and have a natural tendency to sin.
2 humans were made with the ability to choose their behaviour shown in genesis 3. - original sin - those who accept God’s gift of salvation will be able to go theaven.
- Jesus life, death, resurrection and ascension all helped to reddem humans from sin
What is grace?
Catholics believe that God’s actions to save humanity were a result of his love. This love is called grace
catholics believe that God loves his children even though they sin and turn against him.
It emphasises both God’s love and the ends to which God was prepared to go for creation.
