Humanists on capital punishment Flashcards
1
Q
AGAINST arguments for capital punishment.
A
- No court system can be sure to give the correct decision as to whether someone is guilty or not. People are convicted for offences which is later oroved they did no commit. Innocent people can be released but if they are executed they cannot be compensated.
- statistics for countries with the death penalty and those without the death penalty shows that countries which don’t use the death penalty have lower murder rates: it doesn’t deter people.
- The “human right to life” means killing in any form is wrong
- Murderers often think life imprisonment is worse than the death penalty and may try and commit suicide (Harold Shipman and Ian Brady). Prison may be a harsher punishment as a result.
