What is punishment?
The consequences of a wrong decision.
A penalty given by a person in authority on the person who has committed the wrong doing.
What did Jesus say about the afterlife and punishment?
Jesus spoke about gods punishment for people in the afterlife : it is up to god to judge people and he will forgive those who re truly sorry for what they have done and who want to change.
How can punishment and forgiveness go together?
They can work together if the punishment helps the criminal to reform (rehabilitation) and reflect on the pain they have caused.
They can work together to ensure justice is done: it doesn’t mean revenge but restoring what is right.

Christian’s like say that being unforgiving is sinful. Forgiveness must come from the heart. To be able to repent before good means that thenperosnnneeds to live as Jesus showed - showing mercy and compassion.

How can this change a Catholics life
Catholics will try to live out the examples of Jesus, by showing forgiveness to those people who have wronged them.
For example : Pope John Paul’s early life has been filled with suffering and sadness. After he was shot, his first words were of forgiveness for the man who shot him.
