Salivary glands Flashcards

1
Q

How are secretory cells arranged ?

A

In Acini ( clusters of cells arranged around a lumen) surrounded by a basement membrane

Q

Mucous acinus cells

A
  • cells swollen with mucous secretions - flattened basal nucleus - pale staining

Q

Mixed glands

A

Mix of serous and mucous cells: serious in demilunes in mixed (nuclei get squashed to base of cells - mandibular and sublingual glands are mixed

Q

What type of duct is this?

A

Interlobular duct:

Composed of two subdivisions - intercalated and striated. Goes from simple simple columnar to stratified columnar

Q

What inner action controls secretion?

A

Autonomic (parasympathetic) - cranial nerve VII (facial) -> mandibular, sublingual, Buffalo and zygomatic glands - cranial nerve XI (glossopharyngeal) -> parotid gland

Q

Where are the scattered salivary glands?

A
  • lips, cheeks, soft palate, and tongue These secretions are mostly mucous (carbohydrate rich) All of these use exocrine cells

Q

What/how do large salivary glands secrete saliva?

A

They secrete in a duct = single tube Secretions are mostly serous (protein rich/watery)

Q

What gland is this ? Located superficially, ventral to ear (caudal part of head) Larger in herbivore than carnivores

A

Parotid gland: - larger because they need to masticate more due to diet so need more secretions to help break down

Duct travels: - carnivores: across lateral surface of mass enter muscle - opening in vestibule adjacent to upper fourth premolars - Herbs: medial to ventral border of mandible in horse and ox = crosses ventral border of mandible laterally = enters vestibule same as carn

Q

What gland is located in black?

A

Mandibular Gland:

Located at angle of jaw Deeper and larger in herbs Duct opens at sublingual carbuncle. (Close to frenulum)

Q

What gland is labelled number 4?

A

Sublingual:

Monostomatic (single duct) and polystomatic (multiple ducts) parts in most species Ducts run along the floor of oral cavity and open adjacent to frenulum
