Salivary glands Flashcards
What are the 3 major salivary glands, their saliva production, and saliva type?
- Parotid: 25%, serous saliva only 2. Sublingual: 5%, mostly mucous 3. Submandibular: 70%, mostly serous
Where is Von Ebner’s gland? Saliva type?
Base of circumvallate paillae on tongue, serous saliva.
What is the arterial supply of the parotid, Submandibular, and sublingual glands?
P: Glandular branch of superifical temporal and transverse facial. Ling: Submental branch of lingual artery Man: Glandular branch of facial
In general, where is the submandibular gland? Where does the superficial portion of the submandibular gland sit? Deep?
Hooks around posterior border of mylohyoid. Superficial=In mandibular fossa Deep=Oral cavity between hyoglossus m and mandible.
What is the submandibular duct called? Location? Innervation?
-Wharton’s duct. -Enters through sublingual papilla -Chorda tympani of VII
Shape of sublingual gland? What is the sublingual duct also called? Location? Innervation?
-Almond shaped -Bartholin’s or Rivinus ducts -Numerous small ducts along sublingual folds in the floor of oral cavity. -Innervated by chorda tympani VII
what structures pass through the parotid gland?
External Carotid Artery Retromandibular vein Facial nerve
What is the parotid duct also called? Location and pathway? Innervation?
Stensen’s duct. -In deep lobe of parotid -Pierces buccinatory -Opens into oral cavity near 2nd maxillary molar IX via otic panglion
what is the parasympathetic innervation of the submandibular gland and sublingual gland?
Same pathway innervates minor salivary glands in the oral mucosa and cavity. 1. Pre-ganglionic neuron: -Superior salivatory nucleus -CN VII exits internal acoustic meatus -Chorda tympani n. of VII exits through petrotympanic fissure. -Hitch-hikes on lingual n. of V3 2, Post-ganglionic neuron -Submandibular ganglion -Continues to hitch-hike on lingual n. of V3
What is the parasympathetic innervation of parotid gland?
- Pre-ganglionic neuron -Inferior salivatory nucleus -CN IX exits jugular foramen -Tympanic n. of IX, joins tympanic plexus, becomes lesser petrosal n. -Lesser petrosal n. exits foramen ovale 2. Post-ganglionic neuron -Otic ganglion -Hitch-hikes on auriculotemporal n. of V3
What is the arterial supply of the parotid bed?
- External Carotid A.
- Posterior auricular
- Maxillary
- Superficial temporal
What is the venous drainage of the parotid bed?
-Superficial temporal -Transverse facial -Maxillary -Retromandibular -Posterior auricular
what is the sensory, parasympathetic, and sympathetic innervation of parotid bed?
Sensory=Auriculotemporal V3 Para=Otic ganglion via lesser petrosal of IX Symp=Superior cervical ganglion
What is a part of the external ear?
-Auricle -Externall acoustic meatus -Tympanic membrane
Helix Antihelix Concha Tragus Antitragus Intertragic notch
What is the sensory innervation of the auricle? (list)
- Auriculotemporal V3
- Auricular from X
- Auricular from VII
- Cervical plexus
What is the arterial supply of external ear?
-Superficial temporal (ECA) -Posterior auricular (ECA) -Deep Auricular (Maxillary) -Anterior tympanic (Maxillary)
What glands are inside the external auditory meatus?
Ceruminous glands.
How many layers is the tympanic membrane? What is the innervation of outer and inner layer?
3 layered membrane Outer=Auriculotemporal V3 Inner= IX
Where is the middle ear located? Air or fluid filled?
Petrous portion of skull. Air filled.
Major contents of the middle ear?
- malleus, incus, and stapes.
- Stapedius muscle
- Tensor tympani
- VII Chorda tympani
- IX Tympanic nerve, tympanic plexus, lesser petrossal nerve
What are the roof and floor boundaries of middle ear?
Roof=Tegmen tympani (bone separating from brain) Floor= Thin bone superior to internal jugular v, Tympanic canaliculus/branch of IX
What is the anterior wall boundary of the middle ear?
-Auditory tube (middle ear to nasopharynx) -Lesser petrosal n -Postganglion sympathetic fibers
What is the posterior wall boundary of the middle ear?
-Stylomastoid foramen with CN VII -Mastoid antrum -Stapedius
