Palate Flashcards
What structures are a part of the hard palate? What is the hard palate covered in? What is beneath this covering?
- Incisive foramen
- Greater/lesser palatine foramina
- Incisive papilla-Palatal rahpe
- Palatal rugae.Covered in keratinized mucosa, with palatal salivary glands just underneath.
What is the pathway of nasopalatine nerve? Which branch is it?
Branch of V2
-Passes sphenopalatine foramen to nasal cana
l-Passes along superior nasal cavity to nasal septum
-Travels through incisive canal.
What are the structures of the soft palate? Covered in what mucosa? Anterior zone and posterior zone of palatal submucosa contain what?
- Valve
- Uvula
Covered in keratinized mucosa.
Anterior=Contains fat
Posterior= Contains mucous glands.
What are the margins of the soft palate?
- Anterior=Continuous with the hard palate
- Posteriorlaterally= forms superior portion of palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal folds.
- Posteriorly: Uvula hangs in space.
What is the arterial supply of the soft palate? Through what structure?
- Greater palatine (via palatine foramen)
- Lesser palatine (Via palatine foramen)
- Sphenopalatine (Via inscisive foramen)
What are the muscles of the soft palate?
- Tensor veli palatini
- Levator veli palatini
- Palatopharyngeaus
- Palatoglossus
- Musculus uvulae
What is the O, I, A, and N of the tensor veli palatini? Special characteristics?
O: Auditory tube, scaphoid fossa of sphenoid
I: Palatine aponeurosis
A: Tenses soft palate, pulls soft palate laterally, opens auditory tube.
N: Medial pterygoid of V3
Loops around the pterygoid hamulus and acts as a pully.
What is the O, I, A, and N of musculus uvulae?
O: Posterior nasal spin, palatine aponeurosis
I: Muscle of opposite side (itself)
A: Elevates uvula and pulls laterally
N: CNX, via pharyngeal plexus
What is the O, I, A, and N of palatoglossus?
O: Anterior surface of soft palate, palatine aponeurosis
I: Lateral tongue
A: Elevates tongue, depresses soft palate. (Narrows isthmus of fauces)
N: CNX, via pharyngeal plexus
What is the O, I, A, and N of the palatopharyngeus?
O: Posterior border of hard palate, palatine aponeurosis.
I: Pharynx
A: Elevates pharynx, helps close nasopharynx
N: CNX, via pharyngeal plexus
What is the order anterior to posterior of the pillar of fauces and palatine tonsils? What connects the two fauces?
- Palatoglossal arch/fold
- Palatine tonsil
- Palatopharyngeal arch/foldIsthmus of fauces connects the two arches/folds.
Soft palate attaches to the tongue and pharynx via what structures?
Tongue=Via palatoglossal arches
Pharynx= Via palatopharyngeal arches
