Salivary glands Flashcards
where does the submandibular gland open into the mouth?
Sublingual caruncles
What is the blood supply of submandibular gland
Submental artery
What is venous drainage of submandibular gland
Submental vein
Parasympathetic innervation of the submandibular gland
Preganglionic fibres travel in the chorda tympani with the lingual nerve to the submandibular ganglion.
Postganglionic fibres travel with accompanying arteries directly to gland
Sympathetic innervation of the sublingual and submandibular glands
From the superior cervical ganglion
Where does the sublingual gland open into the mouth?
Sublingual folds
Blood supply and venous drainage of the sublingual gland
Submental and sublingual arteries
Submental veins
Parasympathetic innervation of the sublingual gland
Preganglionic fibres travel in chorda tympani that travels with lingual nerve to submandibular ganglion.
Post-ganglionic parasympathetic fibres travel in lingual nerve to SUBLINGUAL gland OR travel directly to sublingual and submandibular glands NOT IN A NERVE.
What are mucoceles
Swelling due to blockage of associated ducts.
Why does mumps occur and what are some common symptoms?
Mumps is a viral infection.
Commonly seen in children prior to MMR vaccine.
Initial symptoms - fever, headache, joint pain
Most common and recognisable symptom is swelling of the parotid gland.
Why is mumps so painful?
The swelling is contained with the fibrous capsule of the gland.
