Origins & Insertions MOM Flashcards
What is the origin of the superficial and deep head of the MASSETER?
Superficial - Maxillary process of zygomatic bone
Deep - Zygomatic arch of temporal bone
What is the insertion of the MASSETER?
Ramus of mandible
What is the origin of the TEMPORALIS?
Temporal fossa
What is the insertion of the TEMPORALIS?
Coronoid process of mandible
What is the origin of the MEDIAL PTERYGOID? (superficial and deep)
Superficial - maxillary tuberosity
Deep - medial aspect of lateral pterygoid plate of SPHENOID BONE
What is the insertion of MEDIAL PTERYGOID?
Ramus of mandible
What is the origin of the LATERAL PTERYGOID? (superior and inferior)
Superior - Greater wing of SPHENOID BONE
Inferior - Lateral pterygoid plate of SPHENOID BONE
What is the insertion of LATERAL PTERYGOID?
Neck of mandible
What is the action of the MASSETER?
Elevates mandible - closes mouth
What is the action of the TEMPORALIS?
Elevates mandible - closes mouth. Also retracts mandible.
What is the action of the MEDIAL PTERYGOID?
Elevates mandible - closes mouth
What is the action of the LATERAL PTERYGOID?
Acting bilaterally - protract the mandible, pushing jaw forward and opens the mouth
Acting unilaterally - side-to-side movement of jaw.
