What are the boundaries of the oral cavity?
Roof - hard and soft palates
Floor - mainly soft tissues, including tongue
Lateral walls - cheeks
Where do the 2 mylohyoid muscles attach in the midline?
Mylohyoid raphe
What muscles sit superior to the mylohyoid muscles in floor of oral cavity?
Geniohyoid muscles
(origin - mental spine of mandible, insertion - body of hyoid)
What does the posterior 1/3 of the tongue form?
Anterior wall of oropharynx
What muscles form the floor of the oral cavity?
Mylohyoid muscles, geniohyoid muscles (and tongue).
What are the 4 different types of tatsebuds?
Fungiform - mushroom
Foliate
Vallate
Filiform - only ones that do not have any tastebuds
What are the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles separated by?
Sagittal septum
What do the intrinsic muscles of the tongue do?
Change the shape and size of the tongue
List the intrinsic muscles of the tongue
Superior longitudinal
Vertical
Transverse
Inferior longitudinal
What do the extrinsic muscles of the tongue do?
Protrude, retract, elevate and depress the tongue.

Palatoglossus
Styloglossus
Hyoglossus
Genioglossus
What is the function of the palatoglossus?
Muscle of the tongue and the soft palate
Depresses the soft palate towards the tongue and lifts the posterior tongue as well
What is the function of the Styloglossus?
Elevates and retracts the tongue
What is the function of the hyoglossus?
Depresses the side of the tongue
What is the function of the genioglossus?
Protrudes the tongue
