Q

What forms a sphincter around the upper oesophagus? And what does this help do?

A

Inferior pharyngeal constrictor
Has a lower circular part called cricopharyngeus

Prevents air being drawn into stomach during inhalation

16
Q

What are the 3 stages of swallowing? Briefly describe each

A

Oral phase - VOLUNTARY - chewing
Pharyngeal phase - INVOLUNTARY- Superior pharyngeal constrictor and soft palate elevation.
Oesophageal phase - Inferior pharyngeal constriction. Upper oesophageal sphincter relaxes and allows food bolus into oesophagus.

17
Q

What does the internal laryngeal nerve supply?

A

Laryngeal mucosa down to level of vocal chords

18
Q

What does recurrent laryngeal nerve supply?

A

Recurrent laryngeal - all intrinsic muscles of larynx and sensation to larynx below the level of vocal chords
