Salivary Gland Lesions 2 Flashcards
Where do the vast majority of salivary gland neoplams arise?
Epithelium, especially glandular epithelium.
What are benign and malignant salivary tumors called?
B= Adenoma M= Adenocarcinoma
What are the clinical features of salivary gland adenomas?
- Encapsulated and movable
- Slow growth
- Non tender
- Firm or compressible
What is a problem with malignant salivary gland tumors?
They can sometimes mimic benign salivary gland neoplasms.
What is the general rule for location and malignancy of salivary gland tumors?
- Larger the gland, more likely to be benign
- Smaller the gland, more likely to be malignant
- Minor salivary glands, 50/50 chance of each.
What is a pleomorphic adenoma? Clinical features?
Benign mixed tumor.
-Painless, slow growing, encapsulated,
What is the most common salivary gland tumor?
Pleomorphic adenoma
What are the clinical features of warthin tumor?
- Exclusivley on parotid gland
- Can happen bilaterally over time
- Associated with smoking
What are the two types of monomorphic adenoma and where are they found?
- Basal cell adenoma: Always on parotid
2. Canalicular adenoma: Only occurs in upper lip.
mucoepidermoid carcinoma Clinical features of high grade and low grade?
- Low Grade: Mimics benign neoplasm, contains mucous pools so is compressible
- High: Aggressive with epithelial component more prominent.
What is the most common malignant salivary gland adenocarcimoma?
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
What are the clinical features of acinic cell adenocarcinoma?
- Always occur on parotid
- Slow growing, low grade.
What are the clinical features of adenoid cystic carcinoma? prognosis?
- Most occur on minor salivary glands,
- high propensity for perineural invasion.
- Poor prognisis long term because it skips down nerves and may metastasize after many years.
What are the clinical features of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma?
- Almost only in minor salivary glands
- low grade resembling benign tumor.
