Mesenchymal Lesions Flashcards
What is a fibroma? Clinical features?
benign Reactive hyperplasia of fibrous connective tissue.
-Smooth surface, sessile, pink nodule.
What is peripheral ossifying fibroma? Clinical features? Recurrence?
Tumor or reactive lesions exclusively on the gingiva
- Nodular, red to pink, firm.
- Higher recurrence rate than typical benign tumor.
What is a fibrosarcoma?
Malignant fibrous tumor.
What is pyogenic granuloma? categorized as? Clinical features? Also known as?
Tumorlike growth, generally non-neoplastic.
- Categorized as lobular capillary hemangioma
- Rapidly growing, vascular (blanches), well circumscribed.
- AKA pregnancy tumor
What is a peripheral giant cell lesion? Seen? Clinical features?
Vascular, tumor-like growth that is reactive.
- Seen exclusively on gingiva or edentulous alveolar ridge
- Firm, vascular.
What are the 5 P’s of gum bumps? (What 5 lesions could the common gum bump lesions be)
- Pyogenic Granuloma
- Peripheral ossifying Fibroma
- Peripheral Giant cell Granuloma
- Plain Fibroma
- Parulis
What is lymphangioma? Clinical features?
Benign growth of lymphatic vessels.
-Doesn’t blanch, Congenital, Found on dorsum of tongue, has a frog egg appearance.
What is angiosarcoma?
Malignant vascular tumor.
What is traumatic neuroma? clinical features?
Reactive proliferation of axons after trauma.
-Anesthesia or dysthesia, pain on palpation.
What is a schwannoma? Clinical features?
Benign neoplasm of Schwann cells
-not painful on palpation, non vascular.
What is a neurofibroma?
Benign fibrous neural tissue tumor.
What is neruofibromatosis? Clinical features?
Hereditary syndrome of neural tissue.
-Multiple neurofibromas, Cafe Au Lait, crowe’s sign (axillary freckling), Lisch nodules on eye.
What is Granular Cell tumor?
Benign neoplasm that 50% are on the tongue.
What is Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors?
Malignant neural tumor.
What is a leiomyoma? Clinical features?
Benign tumor of smooth muscle.
-Slow growing, firm, mucosal nodule with pink or bluish hue (if it proliferates the vasculature as well).
What is leiomyosarcoma?
Malignant tumor of smooth muscle.
What is Rhabdomyoma?
Benign tumor of skeletal muscle.
What is Rhabdomyosarcoma?
Malignant tumor of skeletal muscle.
What is a lipoma? Clinical features?
Benign tumor of fat tissue
-Yellow or pink hue
What is liposarcoma?
Malignant tumor of fat
What is congenital epulis? Clinical features?
At birth only on alveolar ridge tumor like lesion.
- pink-red, smooth surfaced, single or polypoid mass.
- 90% on females.
