Proliferation of lymphoid tissue
- Effects lymph nodes, waldeyres ring or oral lymphoid aggregates
- Oropharynx, soft palate, lateral tongue, and floor of mouth.
- No treatment required.
Where do lymphoepithelial cysts occur? Looks like?
Waldeyer’s ring+floor of mouth, ventral tongue and soft palate.
-Smooth, firm, white or yellow, submucosal mass.
What is the most common cause of anemia? Causes? Oral findings?
Iron deficiency anemia.
- Excessive blood loss
- Increased demands
- Decreased intake
- Decreased absorption
- Erythema, Burning bald (atrophy of papillae) tongue,
What is Plummer-Vinson Syndrome Characterized by?
- Iron deficiency anemia
- Dysphagia
- Esophageal webs
- Koilonychia
- High frequency SCC
What is pernicious anemia? Oral manifestations?
Deficiency of vitamin b12.
- Burning tongue and other mucosal
- Thinning and burning and erythema of mucosa.
What do you see radiographically in sickle cell anemia and thalassemia?
Hair on end appearance of skull.
Less trabeculae in the mandible.
What is thalassemia?
Genetic disorder of hemoglobin synthesis.
What are the 2 main categories of WBC neoplasms and where did it start?
- Leukemia: arise in bone marrow
2. Lymphoma: Arise in lymph nodes.
What are clinical features of leukemia? Oral features?
- Anemia, Leukopenia, Thrombocytopenia.
- Petechiae and pupura of oral mucosa, spontaneous gingival bleeding, prolonged bleeding, extensive gingival ulcerations, candidosis, herpetic infections, gingival enlargement.
What is hodgkins lymphoma, characteristics?
cancer of young adults.
- Begins in lymph nodes
- Head and neck is initial presenting site
- Cervical enlargement and supraclavicular lymph nodes.
What are the characteristics of Burkitt’s lymphoma?
Extremely fast growing lymph tumor with starry-sky appearance under microscope.
What is multiple myeloma? Characteristics?
Multicentric malignancy of plasma cells.
- Bone pain, fractures, fatigue, fever.
- Screen urine for M-protein (bence-jones)
What are the classic clinical signs of Langerhans cell disease?
Scooped out bone loss with teeth that look like they are floating.
