Rights of a consumer when purchasing a good
~ Goods must be of merchantable quality - Goods should be of an acceptable standard, accounting for their price and durability
~ Goods must be fit for the intended purpose - They should do what a consumer reasonably expects them to do
~ Goods must be as described - The description must match the packaging
~ Goods should match the sample shown
Rights of Consumers when Purchasing a Service
~ The supplier is qualified and had necessary skills
~ Supplier applies due care and diligence
~ Materials used are sound and fit for purpose
~ Goods provided must be of merchantable quality
Remedies for breach of Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980

- Refund
- Repair
- Replacement
Retailers Responsibility
The consumer has a contract with supplier, so if theres a problem the seller must resolve it
The seller cannot put up signs stating that consumer rights are limited e.g no refunds
Guarantees
Manufacturers may give a written guarantee, stating that they will repair or replace an item in a certain period of time.
This is legally binding
Second hand goods
- Must be fit for intended purpose
- Do not expect second hand goods to be as good as regular goods
- Goods are sold as seen
Inertia selling
- Goods that are sent without consent
- It is illegal to demand payment
- If enough time and notice is given, consumers may keep the goods
