aim of anointing the sick:
for healing and forgiveness of sins in preparation for the next life
during anointing of the sick they are:
anointed and blessed with oil
united with Jesus’ suffering
forgiven of their sins
restored peace
features of anointing of the sick:
- the priest anoints their head with oil and says a blessing, asking that they receive the grace of the holy spirit
- the priest hears the person’s confession
- the person receives holy communion (‘viaticum’- food for the journey)
- final prayer is said for their soul
aims of anointing the sick:
to have a last confession - prepare you for heaven
to create awareness of God’s presence in time of need
to bring peace and heal the individual
to relate to Christ’s suffering
symbolism of anointing of the sick
the laying of hands and praying over them, anointing the forehead, the palms are blessed with oil
praying over them is calling down the Holy Spirit into the situation
anointing them with oil is the symbolic of the healing and cleansing
what is reconciliation
the forgiveness of sins
reconciliation is where we are freed from the personal sin
list the 4 parts/elements of reconciliation
• contrition • confession • penance • absolution
explain contrition
feeling remorse for the sins committed and deciding not to commit the sin again
explain confession
owning up honestly about sin, accepting responsibility for sin. involves stating all the sins one has committed to the priest.
explain penance
a task which the priest assigns to the person in order to make up for their sin e.g. say the Our Father
explain absolution
when the priest absolves or frees the person from their sin (on Christ’s behalf)
aims of reconciliation
to be absolved of sin to help you get to heaven
to receive God’s grace
to become closer to God
symbolism of reconciliation
there is little symbolism the the importance parts of the sacrament are
repentance of the sinner
the forgiveness of God they receive through the words of absolution
