what is evangelism?
- proclaiming and living out the Gospel or good news of Jesus
the history of evangelisation:
God sent his son into the world to preach about God’s kingdom and salvation. after Jesus’ ascension, God sent the holy spirit to support christians in continuing to preach the faith
Catholics have a duty to teach about the kingdom of God & continue the church
evangelism is not trying to convert others negatively (through fear), but rather sharing and living out that gospel.
what’s the new evangelism?
the church evangelized in places where the gospel had not been heard however, today the church’s mission is mainly in the secular west where the gospel message is often ignored
the church today focuses on strengthening people in their faith and to help lapsed christians return to the faith.
How the Church engages in new evangelization
locally :
locally: Parishes engages with other Churches, communities e.g. to show the Church’s work for justice and common good.
Through written communication e,g charity workers, being a Catechist
This would be useful as when all the people are together they can share their experiences of the faith, they can teach new incomers and they can spread the word to their family, friends and they could be inspired to join the faith
How the Church engages in new evangelization
nationally :
Nationally: The bishops conference of a country which helps Catholics to share the faith or National events to help learn about their faith.
This would be useful for evangelism as anyone could join and it can inspire people to join the faith or learn more about it
How the Church engages in new evangelization
globally :
Globally: The Pope for example spreading the word
At this would help spread evangelism as he is a very inspirational person and he is well respected, people will listen to him and what he has to say, he could teach people about the faith and his them can deepen their faith or maybe join the Catholic faith
how can individuals engage in new evangelism
listening to speeches from the Pope
by going on Pilgrimages
reading local diocesan newspapers
what’s a mission
someone who is sent to promote Catholic’s in a new place
