what’s popular piety?
• is celebration or worship of God which is not part of the liturgical - non liturgical worship
there is no strict pattern in worship though it may include some formal worship within it e.g. the our father.
why is it important that we have both liturgical and non-liturgical worship?
- they help catholics to connect to God through prayer
- they can help us pray together
non liturgical prayer can be used if one can’t attend mass
they are quicker ways to worship /pray
• the CCC supports both types of worship: ‘in addition to the liturgy, Christian life is nourished by various forms of popular piety.’ (CCC 1679)
what does the Vatican II say about our spiritual life?
that spiritual life is not limited to participation in the Liturgy
- this means they encourages catholics to take part in other practices which express spiritual life and offer worship to God
examples of popular piety:
- mary
prayer beads to ask for Mary’s intercession prayers include:
- hail Mary, glory be, our Father.

formal - gives us structure
non-liturgical prayer - shows devoting extra time to God

- Jesus

help us reflect/ remember Jesus’ Passion
helps us reflect on important parts of Jesus’ life
