explain the Introductory Rites
includes gathering, greeting, pentinential rite, gloria, collect
Sign of the Cross (reminder of the Trinity)
• penitential rite (ask for forgiveness for our sins)
• gloria (sunday mass; but not during advent and lent)
• collect (prayer to conclude this section of mass)
explain the Liturgy of the Word
contains Bible readings when all stand for the Gospel reading
• First reading (Old Testament), Gospel
• Second reading (New Testament- usually St Paul)
The readings from the Bible are all linked to the liturgical time of year e.g. advent, christmas, lent, easter
• creed (nicene/ Apostles’ Creed)
explain the Liturgy of the Eucharist
- the priest asks God to send the holy spirit to transform the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ.
- when the bread and wine are brought to the altar to be offered to God
- offertory– bread and wine brought forward to the altar
- eucharistic prayer of thanksgiving
consecration - when the bread and wine become Jesus’ body and blood- transubstantiation
• communion rite - when we receive holy communion . The priest/eucharistic ministers presents the consecrated host
explain the Concluding Rites
when people give thanks for what they have received
the congregation are given a blessing to help them in the week.
the mass is concluded when the priest says: ‘go in peace to love and serve the Lord’.
- our mission to serve God extends beyond the mass as have received God’s grace during the mass
explain the importance of Mass
to receive the holy communion
to praise and thank God
to ask for forgiveness & keep the sabbath holy
to pray to God & proclaim our faith
