Sacral plexus Flashcards
Where is the sacral plexus located?
Surface of posterior pelvic wall
Anterior to piriformis muscle
What are the nerve roots of the sacral plexus?
Anterior rami of spinal nerves S1, S2, S3, S4
Contributions from L4, L5
What are the nerves of the sacral plexus?
Superior gluteal nerve
Inferior gluteal nerve
Sciatic nerve
Posterior femoral cutaneous nerve
How does the superior gluteal nerve enter the gluteal region?
Through greater sciatic foramen
emerges superiorly to piriformis
What accompanies the superior gluteal nerve?
Superior gluteal artery and vein
What are the nerve roots of the superior gluteal nerve?
L4, L5, S1
What are the motor functions of the superior gluteal nerve?
Gluteus medius
Gluetus minimus
Tensor fascia lata
How does the inferior gluteal nerve enter the gluteal region?
Through greater sciatic formane
emerges inferiorly to piriformis
What accompanies the inferior gluteal nerve?
Inferior gluteal artery and vein
What are the nerve roots of the inferior gluteal nerve?
L5, S1, S2
What are the motor functions of the inferior gluteal nerve?
Gluteus maximus
What are the nerve roots of the sciatic nerve?
L4 - S3
What are the motor functions of the sciatic nerve?
Posterior thigh
tibial part - long head of biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, hamstring portion of adductor magnus
common fibular part - short head of biceps femoris
Leg
What are the sensory functions of the sciatic nerve?
Leg - apart from anterior and medial leg by saphenous nerve
How does the posterior femoral cutaneous nerve of the thigh enter the thigh?
Enters gluteal region via greater sciatic foramen
emerges inferiorly to piriformis
descends down posterior thigh
