Gaelic Lords
These were the Irish inhabitants that ruled over their clans (called the derbhfine) who spoke in Irish, followed Irish customs and fashion and followed Brehon law.
The Pale
The English ruled area in and around Dublin.
Brehon Law
Irish laws enforced by Brehons (judges). The Brehon position was usually handed down from father To Son.
Common Law
The Old English’s law system.
Glib
Gaelic fashion tend, a small fringe.
Mantle.
Gaelic. Fashion Trend: Large, heavy cloak
Lease.
A contract formed upon land being rented.
Lord deputy.
The kings representitive in Ireland.
Plantation
People form one country moving to another, taking land and living their lives in it, in attempt to take over the country.
Undertaker
Men who received land +undertook(agreed) to follow the rules that came with this land eg. Not to rent out to the Irish.
Servitor
Retired Soldiers form Scotland or England that recieved land.
Surrender and regrant
King Henry VIII’s way of gaining land:
- He would make the irish surrender their land with a promise.
- He would say that they could have their land back if they swore fealty to the king.
- The king would give back the land, gaining loyalty form the irish inhabitants.
Sheriff
English official that enforced common law in every county.
Flight of the Earls
This was when many. Gaelic Lords left ireland and fld to Europe seeking help from Spanish and other countires’ armies to overthrow the English’s power.
Bawn
A walled courtyard build by the planters for defence.
