Why were the Renaissance popes a cause of the Reformation?
- bad, unholy people
- more interest in science and art than religion

Involved in plot to murder Lorenzo de Medicci at mass

- had mistresses
- made his son a cardinal
How did the church become so wealthy?
- bishops came from wealthy families
- helped kings rule country
- rented land to farmers
- rich gave them money to pray for their souls
What were the abuses of the church?
Simony- Buying + Selling of church positions
Nepotism- Giving family church positions
Absenteeism- Not living in diocese/parishes
Pluralism- holding more than one position
Selling of Indulgences- reduced punishment for sins in purgatory

- Erasmus wrote “In Praise of Folly” making fun of church leaders
- Erasmus translated New Test. Into Greek
- Luther translated N.T. Into German
