They supplied Russia with manufactured goods, coal and iron ore, and strengthened the military
What did the government own under the USSR?
They owned banks, farms, transportation, and mines – essentially everything
What was Russia’s education like before and after the Soviet Era?
During the Soviet era it was free and mandatory; the government controlled everything. The focus shifted to military, science, and engineering. After the Soviet Era students have a variety of subjects and the government doesn’t fund it the same; many teachers quit and more students wanted to work instead of go to school.
What impact did the Soviet government have on Russian artists?
The government limited artistic individual expression; all art had to glorify the achievements of the USSR. This is called “social realism”
Who was Mikhail Gorbachev and what were his policies?
He was a communist president during the 1980s and his policies were glasnost and perestroika, political reformation
How has religion been in Russia?
Before 1917 the religion was the Eastern Orthodox church, during the Soviet era the USSR banned religion and supported atheism. After the USSR, religion is allowed, but only Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Buddhists have full legal liberties
