Running break tests Flashcards
What are the 3 types of running brake tests?
Low Speed Running Brake test
Running Brake Test - Service Brake
Running Brake Test - Automatic Air Brake
When is a Low Speed Brake Test done?
When docking a previously prepared train out of a siding yard environment
How do you run a Low Speed Brake Test?
At a speed less than 5kmh place BCH to full service
Observe braking effort using gauges
Bring train to a stand
Assess performance
When do you run a normal Running Brake Test - service Brake?
Prior to first stop at a suitable location
Train needs to be in motion at a sufficient speed
How do you run a normal Running Brake Test - service Brake?
Place BCH to minimum application
Observe braking effort using ammeter and gauges
Move BCH further
Assess again
Return BCH to RUN and RELEASE
What do you do if the test is not satisfactory?
You can run the train on air brake
Report to TC
They may request further examination… RTAR, cab unattended. Then submit TMM
When do you run a normal Running Brake Test - Automatic Air Brake?
When you have cut in a new cab
Relieving a train
After dividing or attaching a train
Following a brake defect or alteration to braking equipment.
Where should you never run a normal Running Brake Test - Automatic Air Brake?
Inner suburban area
How do you run a normal Running Brake Test - Automatic Air Brake?
With BP fully charged place EP CB to off
BCH to min reduction
Observe reduction of BP pressure and increase in brake cylinder
Move BCH further to reduce pressure to approx 150 kPa
Assess braking
Move BCH to RUN and RELEASE and then back to service zone to Partially release to approx 100kPa
Move BCH to RUN and RELEASE
Ensure BP fully recharged
Set EP CB to on
What do you do if test is unsatisfactory?
Train can be run on EP/ Rheo at a max of 15kmh to first available siding
Notify TC immediately- they may ask you to further examine
