Early years practitioner
They will be qualified at Level 2 in early years. Their responsibilities are diverse including caring for babies and young children, identified in the EYFS.
Early years educator
They will be qualified at Level 3 in early years and will work within ratios. They will take an active role as a key person and help plan children’s next steps and liaising with parents and carers.
Room leader
They must be an experienced early years educator and their responsibilities include running any room at any age within early years. They must also ensure ratios stated in EYFS are being followed.
Teaching assistant
They will support teaching and learning for children. Teaching assistants often work on to one with SEND children. They must update, record and monitor progress and undertake activities such as guided reading.
Teacher/lecturer
They usually have similar responsibilities like being involved in advanced teaching and learning, however teachers are usually working in school environments, whereas, lecturers are likely to work in further education. They both must have a QTS.
Head teacher
They are responsible for the day to day running of the school. They will also liaise with the governing body, engage with the school ethos and more.
SENDCO
All settings will have a special educational needs and disability coordinator in place. They will be responsible for liaising with parents, carers and colleagues to ensure each need of the child is met and the special educational needs code of practice is being adhered.
DSL (designated safeguarding lead)
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, however there will be a named member of staff that holds the DSL position, in line with the Children Act 2004. They must undergo relevant training.
Mental health lead
Children’s wellbeing is significant to holistic health, development and learning. Mental health leads will support children and their families, as well as supporting staff with appropriate strategies.
Mentor
Mentoring supports staff to develop confidence and competence in childcare. A mentor is more experienced in a particular aspect of the occupational role.
Pastoral support
Pastoral support for children is concerned with the child’s overall health, welfare and wellbeing, how children are settling into their environment.
Physical activity and nutrition coordinator (PANCO)
Many early years settings are striving to have a member of staff responsible for promoting physical exercise and nutrition in the setting. The PANCO must have undertaken training at Level 4.
Counsellor
If staff are concerned about children’s wellbeing people may consider specialist intervention. That is why there are counsellors in settings.
Careers advisor
They inform students about a diverse range of occupational roles, training and qualifications, study programmes and career journeys such as opportunities for promotion.
