Education timeline
1870: Attendance for girls and boys compulsory age 5-10
1893-1921: Leaving age raised to 11 in 1893, 12 in 1893, 14 to 1921.
1944: The Education Act 1944- State education free for all, compulsory school age raised to 15.
1972: Compulsory education raised to 16.
1998: National Curriculum introduced, teachers not in charge but accountable for the curriculum.
2008: The education and skills act 2008: Puts a duty on all people in England to participate in education until age 18.
Department for Education (DfE)
The DfE has key responsibilities for teaching and learning in education. It also provides statutory guidance around legislation to influence how we work within education and childcare.
OFSTED
OFSTED inspects and regulates registered settings in education to raise standards, and ensure that children who are accessing education recieve the best possible teaching and learning.
OFQUAL
Ofqual regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England. Regulated qualifications include general education such as GCSE’s and A levels.
Office for Students
OfS works in a similar way to other regulators in that is in place to make sure standards are maintained. The OfS is the independent regulator of higher education in England.
DBS
Disclosure and Barring services includes deciding whether it people are suitable to work with children and/or vulnerable adults.
