Role and Scope of Practice Flashcards
Within scope: Diagnosing illness
Following accepted guidelines for exercise programming for diseases
Assessing for exercise limitations
Identifying potential risk factors through health screening and fitness assessment
Within Scope: Prescribing diets or nutritional supplements
Referring clients to a registered dietitian
Providing general information on healthy, evidence based nutrition
Primary purpose of professional certifications
Protect the public from harm by assessing if candidates meet established levels of minimum competence
Referral by physician
Obtain written permission by the client prior to communicating with physician
Within scope: Treating injury or disease or rehabilitation
Use exercise programming to help clients improve overall health
Help clients adhere to advice from a physician or physical therapist
Design an exercise program after a client has been released from rehab
Within Scope: Monitoring clinical progress for medically referred clients
Document progress and reporting it to the appropriate healthcare professional or physician
Follow recommendations from a physician, physical therapist, or dietitian
Counseling clients
Using coaching techniques to support clients through behavior change
Providing general health and wellness information
Base Training
Focus on moderate-intensity cardio (RPE 3-4)
Keep intensity below talk test threshold (below VT1)
Progress to Fitness training when the client can complete 20 mins of cardio at least 3x per week
Fitness Training
Progress cardio exercise duration and frequency based on the clients goals and time
Integrate vigorous intensity (RPE 5-6) between VT1 and VT2
Five Primary movements
Bend and lift
Single leg
Pushing
Pulling
Rotation
Functional Training
Focus on establishing postural stability and kinetic chain mobility
Exercise programs should improve muscular endurance, flexibility, core function, static and dynamic balance
Progress exercise volume and challenge as function improves
Movement Training
Focus on developing good movement patterns
Programs should include exercises for all five primary movement patterns in varied planes of motion
Integrate functional training exercises to help clients maintain and improve postural stability and kinetic chain mobility
Load/Speed Training
Focus on application of external loads to movements to create increased force production
Integrate 5 primary movement patterns that load them in different planes of motion
Programs should focus on adequate resistance-training loads to help clients reach goals
