Resting Assessments and Anthropometric Measurements Flashcards
Heart Rate
Radial artery - ventral aspect of wrist, thumb side
Carotid artery - in the neck, lateral to the trachea
Average resting heart rate is 60-70 bpm in males, 72-80 bpm in females
Korotkoff sounds
Sounds made from vibrations as blood moves along the walls of the vessel.
Blood Pressure in Adults
Normal <120 and <80
Elevated 120-129 and <80
Stage 1 Hypertension: 130-139 or 80-89
Stage 2 Hypertension: >=140 or >=90
Bioelectrical impedance analysis
Measures electrical signals as they pass through fat, lean mass, and water in the body.
Air displacement plethysmography (Bod pod)
Egg shaped chamber that measures the amount of air that is displaced by a person in the machine
Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA)
Whole-body scanning system that delivers low dose x-ray that reads bone and soft tissue mass.
Hydrostatic weighing
Measures the amount of water a person displaces when completely submerged, thereby indirectly measuring body fat via body density.
Near-infrared interactance (NIR)
Uses a fiber optic probe connected to a digital analyzer that indirectly measures tissue composition.
Expected change and timeline for body composition
Body fat: 2.7-5.9%, 2-3 months
Waist Circumference: 1.9-3.3 cm, 2-3 months
BMI formula
Metric: kg/m^2
Imperial: (Weight/Height^2) x 703
BMI Classification
Underweight: <18.5
Normal: 18.5-24.9
Overweight: 25-29.9
Obesity I: 30-34.9
Obesity II: 35-39.9
Extreme Obesity: >=40
Waist Circumference
For every 1” increase in circumference in men:
BP increases by 10%
Cholesterol increases by 8%
HDL decreases by 15%
Triglycerides increase by 18%
Metabolic syndrome risk increases by 18%
Criteria for waist circumference in adults
Very low: <27.3” Females, <31.2” Males
Low: 27.3-34.7” Females, 31.2-38.6” Males
High: 35.1-42.5” Females, 39-46.8” Males
Very High: >42.9” Females, >46.8” Males
