Considerations for clients with Obesity Flashcards
Possible causes of obesity
Stress, Genetics, Hormones, Sleep, Energy Balance
Leptin
Resides in all fat cells and communicates with hypothalamus
Negative feedback loop; when fat cells decrease in size, leptin decreases directing body to eat more.
Adiponectin
Helps insulin by sending blood glucose into the bodys cells, thus increasing the cells insulin sensitivity or glucose metabolism.
Ghrelin
Secreted by the stomach and plays chief role in appetite regulation
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
58% caused by obesity
RDA for protein
46-56 g/day or 10-35% of total caloric intake
Cardiorespiratory training
Work up to at least 5 days a week
Work at highest intensity that can be sustained comfortably for an extended period of time
30-60 mins per day
Low impact, rhythmic exercises using large muscle groups
Muscular Training
2-3 days a weak; 1 day rest in between
Moderate level intensity; 60-70% 1 rep max
20-30 mins
All major muscle groups
Body weight goals
Realistic goal 5-15% weight reduction
Behavioral weight loss program
Calorie reduction; produce 500-1000 kcal daily deficit
Physical activity
Behavioral strategies; practice self monitoring, avoid tempting situations
Pharmacological interventions
phentermine <3 months
Major factors that contribute to obesity
Environment, genetic predisposition, human behavior
American Dietetic Association’s caloric deficit recommendation
500-1000 k/cal day
Current RDA (recommended daily allowance) for protein intake
10-35% of total caloric intake
Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)
Common daily activities such as walking, standing, and fidgeting
