The self government in the colonies contributed to tensions with the British government because the colonists were used to ruling themselves .

The causes and effects of the French and Indian war
British settlers pushed west into French and Indian lands. France lost all their North American land claims to the British as result of the war. Great Britain won. The Treaty of Paris ended the french and Indian war.This war made Britain go in debt, making them tax the colonists, causing the revolutionary war.
Mercantilism
Existed to make the mother country rich by exporting more to the colonies than they import from the colonies
Pontiac’s rebellion
During Pontiac’s war the leader of the Ottawa nation helped start an all out attack on the British settlers
The Proclamation of 1763
The Colonists were forbidden to cross the Appalachian mountains because of this act. They were forbidden to cross it because Britain didn’t want to pay the money to fight the native Americans that lived there. The colonists wanted to live there because we won the land in the French and Indian war
Sugar act, 1764
Taxed molasses, rum, and certain wines
Quartering act, 1765
Made to provide housing and supplies to the British soldiers. Colonists thought that this act as well as the writs of assistance violated their privacy
The stamp act, 1765
It taxed paper documents. It was passed to help pay off the war debt and to pay for the defense of the colonies. Colonists didn’t like this act because they didn’t think that Britian had the authority to tax them anymore
The Declaratory act, 1766
Stated that parliament had the power to make laws for the colonies “In all cases whatsoever”
The Townshend Act, 1767
The 1767 Townshend acts specified that British would only tax products imported into the colonies. They were eventually repealed except for the tax on tea
The Boston Massacre, 1770
Paul Revere made an engraving of the Boston Massacre that was the first example of historical propaganda. John Adams defended redcoat soldiers at the Boston massacre trial. The outcome of the trial was that the captain and most of the soldiers weren’t found guilty
