A

= Influenza (ABC)
-Rep in Nucleus, 8 segments
-Antigenic Variation
-Resp drops Trans (dec-feb, oct for vaccine)

A: epidemics/pandemics (shift)
B: endemics (drift)

Nueraminidase (Oseltamivir, Anamivir)

VAC: nasal (live) and IM (killed)

Pneumonia: complication (staph)

KIDS: NO ASPIRIN (Reyes syndrome), GBS

Paramyxovirus

A

Rubeola = Measles
-Resp Drops
4 C’s
-Cough
-Coryza (runny/stuffy nose)
-Conjuctivitis (red eyes)
-Koplik spots (bluish white spots inside cheek) then rash (face then down)
-Comp: pneumonia, SSP, ence
-Vitamin A helps

Mumps
-Parotitis (inf in cheeks)
-Testicular inf / orchitis
-Meningitis

RSV
-Infants < 6mo (G protein)
-Pneumonia, bronchiolitis #1
-Ribavirin (TX) - adult
-Palivizumab (prevention)

Parainfluenza
-Seal bark cough
-Steeple sign in X ray
-Causes Croup
-Inspiratory stridor (key word)

Rhabdovirus

A

= Rabies (via animals)
-looks bullet shaped

Binds Nicotinic Ach Rec

Fever, encephalitis, drooling/foam

TX: passive admin of human rabies immunoglobulin, and killed vaccine after bitten

Reovirus (Rotavirus)

A

-Doubled stranded RNA, 11 segments, naked

Rotavirus
-Fecal oral route
-Toxin-med explosive watery diarrhea #1 (NSP4 - increases Cl perm)
-Seasonal (winter), children at higher risk (infant/daycare)

TX: oral rehydration, supportive

VAC: live att (oral)
-1st before 3 mo, increase risk of intussecption (telescoping of bowel)
