RISKY PLAY Flashcards
how do we provide safe play environments?
most playground injuries can be prevented or reduced in severity through careful planning, design and maintenance of the playground and play equipment, and supervision of children ad being alert of hazards in the environment.
what are the role of playground standards?
playground standards serve as a guide and have an important part in the risk assessment and management of play provision.
- they relate to play equipment (fixed and mobile) used in play provision
what is a playground equipment standard?
fall zones - having an area around equipment intended to provide protection during initial impact.
define risk:
risks are situations where outcome is uncertain regardless of whether that outcome is predominantly positive or negative
it is a situation where something that is possible may be negotiable for children.
define hazard:
hazard is an identifable source of harm associated with a high probability of serious injury or death - inherently dangerous and needs to be remedied.
what are some health and developmental benefits of risk and challenge in play?
- try new physical activities
- test the limits of their physical, intellectual and emotional development
- develop a wide range of manipulative and motor skills
- develop muscle strength, endurance and skeletal strength
- satisfied children’s innate need for risk with reasonable risks in order to prevent them finding greater unmanaged risk themselves
- children gain a sense of accomplishment
- fosters confidence
- encourages children to seek new challenges and learn new skills
what outcomes of the early years learning framework (EYLF) support risky play?
outcome 1) children have a stronger sense of identity
outcome 3) children have a strong sense of wellbeing
outcome 4) children are confident and involved learners
what might risky play look like?
- situations where children have an obvious desire to challenge themselves and extend their skills
- play with heights
- play near dangerous elements
- rough and tumble play
what is good balancing of safety and play value?
- areas where children play should be as SAFE as NECESSARY and not safe as possible
- promote risk and risk awareness and accept accidents as an intrinsic part of children’s play and risk taking as part of the value of play
what are some ways to still ensure risky play is safe of precautiosn etc?
- technical inspection
2. dynamic risk-benefit assessment
what is involved in technical inspection?
routine check of equipment and the environment to identify and eliminate hazards e.g. wear and tear, damage, cleanliness to identify potential sources of harm.
what is involved in dynamic -risk benefit assessment?
- observations and potential interventions by adults supervising children as the play unfolds
- based on a sound grasp of how children learn and grow through play
- indepth knowedge of children, play and its role for learning and development/
what is forest kindergarten>
is a concept of outdoor pre school where they explore the environment etc.
how do children learn best affectively?
through risky play, interaction, cooperative play and social play.
