what counts as abuse?
sexual, emotional or physical
what counts as neglect?
deprivation of essential needs for the child to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.
neglect can be intentional or unintentional.
what are the main characteristics of physical abuse?
non-accidental injury or pattern of injuries.
can be caused by excessive beating, attempted strangulation and female genital mutilation.
what are the main characteristics of sexual abuse:
using power over them or taking advantage of their trust.
bribed, threatened physically or psychologically to make them participate in the activity.
what are the main characteristics of emotional abuse:
psychological harm that can damage the confidence and self-esteem of the young person through behaviours such as excessive criticism, withhoolding affection, exposure to domestic violence, intimidation or threatening behaviour.
what are the main sources of notification of abuse and neglect and what do they point out?
police, educators and medical are the biggest source of notification of abuse and neglect, with the report itself from the subject being the smallest source of notification. this highlights the importance of educators in their role of reporting suspected abuse and neglect.
what should an educator do while talking to a child suspected of being subject to abuse or neglect?
talk to the child, avoid leading questions such as did someone hit you and instead use open questions, report the abuse, talk to child about recording info and reporting abuse.
characteristics of parents who abuse or neglect:
- lacked a successful model of parenting and family life
- have been abused themselves as children
- lack an understanding of child’s needs or age-appropriate expectations.
- being overwhelmed by external stress and unable tot cope
- chronic illness such as depression,disability which limits their ability to meet the needs of their children
- unable to control their anger or frustration, resulting in lashing out n child
what is in the national quality standard (NQS) in ECEC policy manual?
there are 4 things
- safety, supervision, indicident and emergency management and child protection to protect children’s health and safety.

each child is respected
what is in supervision in the national quality standard?
at all times , reasonable precautions and adequate supervision ensure children are protected from harm and hazard.
what is in incident and emergency management in the national quality standard?
plas to effectively manage incidents and emergencies are developed in consultation with relevant authorities, practiced and implemented?
what is in child protection in the national quality standard?
management, educators and staff are aware of their roles and responsibilities to identify and respond to every child at risk of abuse or neglect.

why has the MRG been developed?
it has been developed to help frontline mandatory reporters determine whether the risk to a child or young person meets the statutory threshold of ‘risk of significant harm’.
