what are nutrients/ what do nutrients do?
nutrients are a source of energy, that enable growth and maintenance/ repair of body tissue, and also regulate body processes
what are some positives of the food pyramid?
it provides a simple overview, does not require high literacy levels
- promotes sometimes food rather than being overly restrictive.
what are some negatives of the food pyramid?
- many people have difficulty classifying food
- terms such as ‘moderate’ are not clear
- does not suit all diets/ cultures
- may promote overeating, particularly for sedentary people
what is discretionary eating?
it is extra food that is not required for survival but is still needed to add to a diet e.g. donut
what is empty kilojoules?
empty kilogjoules refer to consumption of foods that are low of nutritional vale. many processed foods have low nutritional value.
how does food colouring affect preferences in food?
aesthetic and cultural aspects of food can influence our preferences e.g. the colour green can appear to be fresher and healthier if they have a green cplour additive
what does the western diet consist of?
the wester diet, compared to diets from other cultures, is higher in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates, it is linked to a range of disease and mental health problems
what is the western diet impact on cognition?
western diet has a negative impact on development of the hippocampus, the hippocampus is involved in memory, learning, spatial navigation, flexible and goal directed behaviour, regulate appetite.
what are some factors that contribute to feeding issues?
- preferences (some ppl have highly restricted food preferences)
- oral/ facial hypersensitivities e.g. low tolerance of food texture - and are particularly common in children with disabilities
- tube feeding
- allergies
- food placement in advertising
- socioeconomic status/ level of education
- food security
why can food placement in advertising be a problem?
- misleading information about health benefits
- product placement indicating e.g. it is normal to have high sugar cereals or lunch box snacks
- suggestions of peer popularity
what are some ways to increase healthy foods? in education settings?
introduce food and tasting, texture, smell, there’s so many ways to get children interested in the food itself, just by experiencing the food
- eg. have a vegetable garden where children can get involved directly with making food
- eating the rainbow
