Risks for Perio Disease 3: Other Risk Factors Flashcards
What is root proximity in terms of local risk factors?
If roots are very close there is very little if any bone in between them.
There is an increase correlation b/w interproximal distances and perio pockets
What is true about occlusal trauma as a perio disease risk factor?
It does NOT initiate periodontal disease
If occlusal trauma doesn’t initiate perio disease, then why is it a risk factor?
It can impact the progression of perio disease by altering the inflammatory cell filtrate within the periodontal tissues
What was impaired in impacted 3rd molar extractions in patients over 30?
Periodontal healing
What made the lack of healing after impacted wisdom tooth extraction even worse for those over 30?
Smoking and widened follicles (halo around impacted molar on radiograph)
What are perio-endo combined lesions?
Associated with necrotic pulp where perio and endo components coincide
What are the clinical findings of a perio-endo lesion?
Pain Negative pulp tests Narrow and Deep probing depth Tooth mobility Furcation involvement Radiographic bone loss
What shaped lesion is an indicator of a Perio-Endo lesion?
J-shaped
How would you go about making a risk assessment?
ID persons at risk for development or progression of perio disease
Ongoing
Provide an inventory of patients current preventive practices
Serve as a guide for patient management
How would you address age?
Patient education
Encourage more frequent visits
What is the etiology of anything!?
Bacteria
