Risks for Perio Disease 1: Systemic Factors Flashcards
What is a risk factor?
An environmental, behavioral, or biological factor that has been associated with a disease
What are the 2 criteria for deeming something a risk factor?
Biologically plausible as a causal agent for disease
PRECEDES the development of disease
What is a systemic factor?
A risk factor that impacts the “whole” patient
What is a local factor?
Impacts a tooth or even a specific surface of a tooth
What are two categories of local risk factors?
Highly Plaque Retentive
Other
What are some examples of Systemic risk factors
Age Gender Genetics Race Smoking
What are some systemic risk factors that only have weak/inconsistent association with Perio disease?
Socioeconomic status
AIDS
Psychological Stress
Osteoporosis
How does age impact chances of getting perio disease?
As age increases, loss of attachment becomes more prevalent, extensive, and severe
Why is attachment loss related to age?
Attachment and bone loss may be a result of long-term exposure to other risk factors. Over time, this has a cumulative effect.
Degenerative changes may increase susceptibility to perio disease
What do studies show about gender’s relationship to perio disease?
Periodontal disease is more prevalent in men than women
Why do men have more perio disease than women?
Men have greater plaque and calculus
21% more males have teeth with calculus than females
What are the possible reasons for men having more perio problems than women?
Oral hygiene and preventive procedures
Hormonal differences
Other physiological/behavioral differences
How does socioeconomic status correlate with periodontal disease?
There is an increased prevalence of periodontal disease with a decreased socioeconomic status.
What are three categories that make up socioeconomic status?
Income
Rural location
Education level
What are some possible reasons for the link between socioeconomic status and perio disease?
Poor oral hygiene
Tobacco smoking
Access to care
Awareness/patient education
