Path Mechanisms I 1: Pathogenesis, Etiology, Inflammation Flashcards
What is the broad definition of pathogenesis?
Development of a disease including the origin and the chain of events leading to that disease.
What is the cellular definition of pathogenesis?
Cellular events and reactions and other pathogenic mechanisms occurring in the development of the disease
What is etiology?
The study or theory of the factors that cause disease and the method of their intro to the host; the causes or origin of disease or disorder.
What type of disease is PD?
It is an inflammatory disease with an infectious etiology
What is inflammation exactly?
Local response to a cellular injury that includes:
Capillary dilation
Leukocyte infiltration
Redness/Heat/Pain
What is acute vs. chronic inflammation?
Acute is the initial response
Chronic can lead to disease, aka PD
What is the purpose of inflammation?
Eliminate the initial cause of cell injury
Clear necrotic cells
Initiate tissue repair
What are the cell players involved in inflammation?
Immune cells
Blood vessels
Molecular Mediators
What is the etiological cause of PD?
Bacterial
What do the bacteria do that indirectly damages host tissues?
Induce an inflammatory response
So what hurts us more, the microbes or the inflammatory response?
Mostly inflammation
