risk and challenge Flashcards
What are some examples of challenging activities?
- climbing
- water-based sports, such as canoeing and surfing
- rugby
What is one of the main appeals of physical activity to many participants?
That it offers them both a challenge and an acceptable level of risk
What is the challenge in climbing?
Anyone taking part in climbing is going to have to cope with a challenging environment in terms of height and difficult climbs
What challenges are involved in water based sports?
There may be difficult water conditions
What are some examples of physical challenges within an activity?
- to tackle a bigger opponent in rugby
* to run in excess of 26 miles in a marathon
What is a risk assessment?
An assessment of the sporting environment prior to the event actually happening, in order to spot potential hazards or dangers
Why is an risk assessment carried out?
To be sure that a degree of challenge is still present but that safety is fully considered
What is meant by risk control?
This means that every effort has to be made by the participants, and those in charge, to ensure that the activity continues in a safe manner once the correct level of risk assessment has been carried out
What should the participants always do to abide by the conduct of risk control?
They should always perform properly within the rules and regulations of their activity, and avoid foul play and inappropriate behaviour
What are some examples of participants performing according to the risk control?
- making sure their equipment is in good order (sharp studs of football boots could badly injure another player)
- not wearing any jewellery
Why do organisers need to ensure that they are fully qualified and knowledgeable to be in charge of a group?
So that…
• they do not mix age or gender groups
• they do not have too many people taking part
• the group has warmed up properly
What safeguards needed in case it is necessary to contact the emergency services?
- important to always have first aid equipment available
- to be aware of where qualified first aiders are
- to know where there is an available telephone
