physique Flashcards
Why is physique a factor that an individual has very little control over?
Because their basic physique is something that a person is born with and which develops naturally. A person may be able to influence their body composition and musculature, but their height and general body shape are preordained
What may a person’s somatotype mean?
That they are particularly suited to a specific sport, or it can mean that some activities are more difficult, with less chance of success
What are the three extremes of body types?
Endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorp
What is an endomorph?
A person that tends to be roughly pear-shaped, with wide hips, wide shoulders, a tendency to gain fat (especially on the upper arms and thighs), and have short legs in relation to their trunks
What would an extreme endomorph find difficult?
They will find it difficult to carry out weight bearing aerobic exercises, such as distance running
What would an extreme endomorph find easier?
Sports such as rugby where their bulk could be an advantage in certain playing positions, such as pack members in the scrum
What is a mesomorph?
A person that has a generally wedge-shaped body with broad, wide shoulders, muscled arms and legs, narrow hips and a minimum amount of fat
What would an extreme mesomorph find difficult?
Their body type is unlikely to make any sports unsuitable for them to participate in at a high level
What would an extreme mesomorph find easier?
They can excel in strength, agility and speed sports, and they are paricularly well suited to swimming events
What is an ectomorph?
A person who is predominantly long, slender and thin with narrow shoulders and hips, thin arms and legs, and very little muscle and body fat
What would an extreme ectomorph find difficult?
Owning to their slight build, they are not suited to power and strength sports
What would an extreme ectomorph find easier?
They can succeed at endurance events, such as marathon running, and also gymnastics where their light frame is an advantage
