What is the significance of the Editing in Riptide
Riptide uses a fast paced intellectual montage editing style that have a clear link to the lyrics and allows the audience to explore the Visual metaphors Vance Joy uses
it can be inferred to the audience that the ‘jumpy’ like editing represents women being jumpy / fearful of men

Riptide has no clear narrative - there are a few coherent narrative sequences - E.g. where the girl goes missing in the graveyard - but this clear disruption to narrative is seen as a deliberate choice of Vance Joy
What is the significance of intertextuality in the music video ‘RIptide’
Multiple references to the western and Horror genre
. Horror genre - lyrics like ‘fear’ + images of the woman being dragged into darkness
- ” i was scared of dentists and the dark”
. Western genre - The establishing shots of the desert and the cowboy style clothing - The pull out shot is used to unveil the contest of the frame and expose the vast background setting - the desert

. women are presented as vulnerable and at the mercy of men - E.g. frames showing a woman being dragged away - being the stereotypical ‘damsel in distress’

Women viewing women in the media being fearful of men may indoctrinate them into this fear of men / patriarchy.
What is the significance of Camera angles in the music video ‘Riptide’
. The use of high camera angles suggests the lack of power women have - in frames where the woman is tied to a tree - as she struggles against the ropes - The ropes are symbolic of patriarchy
Application of Laura Mulvey ~ Male gaze
. Women - although not sexualised - are repeatedly presented as helpless / vulnerable
. Links to the motif of photography throughout the music video - shows how women are seen only through the lens of patriarchy
Analysis of the ‘singing woman’
The void black background paired with the spotlight on her face depicts how the patriarchy treats women - just a means of ‘looking pretty’
She is seen to be mouthing the lyrics of the song throughout the play but towards the end her makeup is running and the lyrics are changing from the original verse - this depicts how the patriarchy takes all they want from women and leaves them ‘broken’
