Describes the right of the patients and obligations of the service providers of the healthcare system.

Introduced in 2008 as a national approach to healthcare.

- Everyone has the right to have access to healthcare.
- Everyone has the right to have the highest possible standard of
mental and physical health
- Australia is made of people of many different cultures and ways of
life. The Charter acknowledges and respects these differences.

Communication:
In order to obtain the best possible outcome of patient’s health care, exchange of information between all those involved must be open, honest and thorough.

Access:
Access is fundamental, patient should have the right to select between public and private health services.
However, note that in some cases, health services may be limited due to geographical restriction and/or lack of availability of the particular health service.

Respect:
All participants of the healthcare systems are entitled to be treated with respect and not be discriminated due to culture, beliefs, values or characteristics such as age and gender.

Participation:
For the best possible outcome of patient’s health care, it is important for the patient to have an active role in the decision making process of their treatment (after informed consent). They have the right to seek a second opinion and to withhold their treatment.

Privacy:
Everyone in the healthcare system must be respectful of eachother’s privacy. Patients have the right to expect that their personal health and details be collected, used, disclosed and stores in accordance to the relevant laws of privacy.

Safety:
Everyone is entitled to be in a safe, secure and supportive healthcare environment.
