Communication
- Without effective and proper communication, professionals cannot
get the required consent for the procedure the treatment.
- Communicate and discuss the treatment with the patient in a
language that they understand.
What is Ethics?
A code of behaviour that regulates the conduct of a professional person and outlines their responsibilities and obligations to the patient, the profession and the community.
Note. Not imposed by the law.

Competency
- Professionals have the duty to be competent at the procedures they
practice
- This includes continual training and learning = commitment to
lifelong learning

Honesty
- As a professional person, we are in a position of power and influence.
Patients must always be told the truth and advised so that they
themselves can act honestly and within the law.
- E.g. we must not use our influence for unlawful purposes such as
encouraging the patient to select a certain treatment plan for self
interests (money)

Integrity & Respect
- As a professional person, we are in a position of power and influence.
It is unlawful and inappropriate for us to use this position to develop
personal or intimate relationships with the patients
- Professionals must respect the patient and staff. This relationship
must always remain on a professional level.

Privacy
- It is the duty of a profession to keep the affairs of the patient private.
- Any personal information must not be disclosed to a third party
without the permission of the patient with the exception where
criminal matters are involved.
