Rhetorical ploys 2 Flashcards
Trading on implicature
Using misleading statements without explicitly saying anything untrue, though implicating something that is unjustified to make you believe it is true
Many questions
Leading questions. Sort of based on explanation. Why do cat’s paint? Doesn’t ask whether they do paint. Would you vote for him if knew he is pro guns? He is not pro guns but it made you think he is.
Smokescreen
Deflecting attention by addressing a different (not necessarily related) issue
Buzzwords
Using fashionable / ‘ hot’ words that have high power in second connotation
Jargon
Using words that are likely unfamiliar to audience, creating exclusivity
Acronyms
Series of initials used as though they’re a word. Creating insiders of those who can decode them.
Spin
Using jargon to obfuscate the truth and thereby making it less likely for people to understand and oppose it.
