Rhetorical ploys
Non-argumentative, Attempt to persuade someone but doesn’t give good reason, done by other means
Appeal to specific feelings
Mostly in consumer behavior, politics etc. Following are examples
Appeal to novelty
Trying to make you buy/believe it because it’s new
Appeal to popularity
Desire to run with crowd, not missing out.
Appeal to compassion, pity or guilt
Doing something purely by evoking feeling of compassion towards recipients. (charity
Appeal to fear
Often used by politicians, steering crowd by making them fear consequences of the counter
Appeal to ridicule
Attacking opponent by making them seem ridiculous.
Direct attack and hard sell
Verbal means/commands. Say yes to ..!
Scare quotes
Influencing opponent by putting words in ‘quotes’ to change the meaning
