Informal fallacies Flashcards
Majority of belief
Most people think so so it should be that way
Common practice
Most people do it therefore it is morally acceptable
Gambler’s fallacy
Chance is 50/50, the last 5 times the coin landed on heads so the next must be tails
Ad hominem
Attacking the opponent instead of the argument, or disproving because of dislike for that person
Ad hominem circumstantial
Rejecting the argument because the speaker would benefit from it
Te quoque
Rejecting based on hypocritism or inconsistancy between action/claim.
Appeal to authority
Unjustified appeal to authority, he/she does not in fact have authoratative on matter at hand/reason to doubt
Perfectionist
Debunking idea purely bc it will not completely fix the problem
Weak analogy
One thing is similar to another, therefore similar in further aspects. Vans are used by terrorist. We don’t ban vans so we shouldn’t ban guns
