Revlon Marketing Intern Flashcards
Tell me about yourself.
Junior at the University of Washington
Majoring in marketing and information systems
On campus i’m involved in a few different clubs:
I’m the Director of Administration for my school’s women in business club and I’m also in the American marketing association
I did a marketing internship last year in eyewear on the brand management team, which was a great experience
I’ve been searching for an internship for this summer
Interested in the beauty industry
Which is what led me here
Why do you want to work at Revlon? Why this role?
Interested in learning how marketing works in the beauty industry and what the hair tools market looks like
Revlon is such an established brand, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to see how a company like that does business
I also just like Revlon’s brand image: I always think of boldness, the red lipstick/nails — it stands out
I think that the beauty industry is a great space to work in because of the impact you can have in helping people feel good about themselves, experiment with their style
Revlon has a history of inclusion (and innovation)
Saw recently how the company was getting into sustainability
Overall it just seemed like an interesting place to work
This role:
From the job description, it sounded like this role involves a lot of doing industry research and developing business strategy and marketing ideas, and I’m really looking to develop more skills in those areas
Plus the exposure to the beauty industry
The intern project seemed really comprehensive - I liked that interns from different teams and subject areas worked together instead of just each working on a project by themselves - could get a whole picture of the business, very hands - on
Seemed like a great opportunity
Why should we hire you?
I know that this role involves a lot of analyzing industry data and finding insights, then creating recommendations/strategy from that
I have experience doing that from my last internship, I used to analyze data and trends in eyewear to see what was selling the most
I also have experience creating marketing recommendations from my on-campus consulting experience working with small businesses
And this has helped me with softer skills like communication, organization, and time management which i know would also apply to this position
So overall, I know that I could bring these skills here and build upon them to make an impact at Revlon as well.
Why work in the beauty industry? Why hair and tools?
Dynamic, creative evolving all the time
Self-confidence and self expression aspect to it as well: making people feel good about themselves and experiment with their style - very rewarding
Hair:
I think hair is fun because there’s so much you can do with it and so many tools out there
I’m pretty attached to my straightener and hair dryer so I know how useful hair tools are
I think it’s so cool the way hair trends have changed over time and to see where they’re going as well
What do you want to get out of this internship?
Learn more about the beauty industry and how it works, learning from the people at Revlon
Also not just marketing, since I know marketing interacts with so many other areas of the businesses I’m excited to see how those work and how they all interact
Enhance marketing skills (analyzing data, creating strategy) and be able to apply them
I know the job posting also mentioned career development opportunities which I’d definitely like to take part in
What skills could you bring to the role?
market/trend research - did in my past job analyzing eyewear styles to see which was selling the best
Project management - worked on in my on campus activities like student consulting and women in business group helping planning events - i think would be applicable here since know this role involves juggling different tasks
Also taught me skills like communication and organization, which I know would be useful here as well
Strengths?
Communication
The student organizations I’m in are very collaborative
We work together a lot when having to plan meetings and a lot of our roles intersect
so I’ve learned to communicate effectively when I’m trying to get something done or meet a goal/deadline
During group projects: I’m often the one that manages communication and meeting times between members
Curiosity
I enjoy learning about things that I don’t know
Helped me fully understand the projects/tasks that I work on - both with school activities and with work
Seek out new experiences
(I was a consultant for a student agency, and I think being curious really helped me understand the business and the environment they were operating in, and getting to know the client’s goals)
(if example needed: AMA)
Organization
Good with deadlines when on projects
Prioritizing what needs to be done and when (which I especially had to do this year with balancing some of my school activities and deadlines)
When I’m working on something I tend to divide things up into smaller chunks so it’s easier to complete the whole thing
(As the director of Administration for Undergrad Women in Business, there’s a lot of tasks I have to do by a certain time, or forms that need updating, etc. I’ve learned how to schedule those (via calendar) and spread out the work so I’m not rushing to do everything at the last minute.)
(If example needed: UWiB)
Thorough
Keep track of details
Can pay attention to multiple components of a project/task, so that everything flows smoothly
Weaknesses?
Too much attention to detail/ focus too much on small things and overthink to the point where it isn’t helpful anymore
To try to fix that, when i’m working on something like a report or a presentation, I try to
check-in and remind myself of when that kind of precision is actually necessary, refocus my attention on the big picture
Product ideas
One topic that’s gaining more traction is sustainability - both from consumers and by businesses
I think it could be interesting to incorporate that into hair tools — either tools made from sustainable or recyclable materials (aluminum, glass, etc.) use less energy, or packaged in sustainable/biodegradable packaging
Going with the environmental aspect, could also be interesting to incorporate natural ingredients into hair color (henna, indigo) since some consumers are concerned about the ingredients in hair coloring
How will you make an impact during your internship?
Being curious and learning as much about the business/the environment
Putting in continuous effort to improve my skills and knowledge, especially when doing a task that’s unfamiliar
Collaborating effectively with team members and other interns (when working on a project)
