Reversinle Rewctions Flashcards
What is the forward reaction
From the reactants to the products
What is the backward reaction
From the products to the reactants
What happened to concentrations as they react forward and backwards
As reactants react the concentrations fall so the forward reaction will slow down
As more and more products are made and the concentrations rise the backward reaction will speed up
What happens if the forward reaction in the backward reaction are going at exactly the same rate
The system is called an equilibrium
What does an equilibrium mean
Both reactions are happening but there is no overall effect
this means concentrations of reactants and products have reached a balance and won’t charge
When is an equilibrium only reached
If the reversible reaction takes place in a close system
What is a closed system
None of the reactants or products can escape and nothing else can get in
What does it NOT mean if a reaction is at an equilibrium
The amount of products and reactants are equal
What happens if the equilibrium lies to the right
The concentration of products is greater than the reactants
What does it mean if the equilibrium lies to the left in a reaction
The concentration of reactants is greater than of its products
What does the equilibrium position depend on
The temperature the pressure the concentration
If a reversible reaction is endothermic one way what will it be the other way
Exothermic
What is the energy transferred from the surroundings by an endothermic reaction equal to
The energy transferred to the surroundings during the exothermic reaction
Example of this
Thermal decomposition of hydrated copper sulphate
What does anhydrous mean
Without water
