Air Pollutiom Flashcards
What are fossil fuels contain
Hydrocarbons
What is it complete combustion
When there is enough oxygen for all the fuels to burn
What is incomplete combustion
If there is not enough oxygen to burn all the fuel
What happens on the incomplete combustion of carbon
Carbon monoxide can be produced as well as carbon dioxide
What happens if particulates are inhaled
Get stuck in the lungs and cause damage and can lead to respiratory Problems
Why are particulates bad for environment
Reflect sunlight back into space
this means that less like reaches the Earth causes global dimming
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous
Stops blood from carrying oxygen by binding to the haemoglobin that carries oxygen so less will be transported around the body
What can a lack of oxygen in the blood leed to
Fainting a coma or even death
Why is carbon monoxide hard to detect
Doesn’t have a colour or smell
When is sulphur dioxide released
During the combustion of fossil fuels that contain sulphur impurities
The sulfur because oxidised
Where are nitrogen oxides created
Created from a reaction between nitrogen and oxygen in the air caused by the heat or burning
What happens when clouds mix with dilute sulphuric acid or dilute nitric acid
They fall as acid rain
What does acid rain due to the environment
Kills plants and damages buildings and statues makes metal corrode
What are the problems to sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide cause
Respiratory problems breathed in
