Alkenes Flashcards
What are alkenes
Hydrocarbons that have a double bond between two carbon atoms
What does the double carbon mean
That the alkenes have two fewer hydrogens compared to alkanes contain the same number of carbon atoms
This means they are unsaturated
Why are alkenes more reactive than alkanes
The double bond can open up to make a single bond allowing carbon atoms to bond with other atoms
First four alkanes
Ethene propene butene pentene
General formula for alkenes
C n H 2n
What do alkenes combust completely to produce
Water and carbon dioxide
Incomplete combustion of an alkene
Alkenes + oxygen —-> carbon + carbon monoxide + Carbon dioxide + water
What does incomplete combustion result in
Smoky yellow flame and less energy being released compared to complete combustion
