Factors affecting the rate of reaction Flashcards
What effects rate of reaction
Temperature
Concentration a solution or pressure of a gas
Surface area
Presence of a catalyst
What increases the rate of the reaction
Increasing the number of successful collisions between the reacting particles
What happens when temperature increases
Particles gain more kinetic energy they move faster so collide more frequently
If they move with more energy than they have more chance of having enough energy when they collide
What does increasing the concentration or pressure mean
If a solution becomes more concentrated means there are more particles in the same amount of volume when the pressure of the gas is increased it means that the same number of particles occupies a small space
What happens to the particles if concentration or pressure is increased
More collisions between the particles because there is a smaller space and makes collisions more frequent
What increases the surface area
Breaking a solid into smaller pieces
What does increasing the surface area do to the particles
For the same volume of a solid the particles around it will have more areas to work on so they’ll be more frequent collisions
What is a catalyst
A substance that speeds up a reaction without being used up
How do catalysts work
Decrease the activation energy needed for a reaction to occur and do this by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy
What are enzymes used for
Biological catalysts
catalyse living things
