Retinal Detachment Flashcards
Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment?
Caused by tear or hole in neurosensory retina, allowing fluid from vitreous to pass into subretinal space
Tear caused by posterior vitreous detachment, degenerative retinal changes, trauma
In advance age, high myopes, after ocular surgery
Retinal detachment?
And types?
Cleavage in plane between the neurosensory retina and RPE
3 types
I. Rhegmotogenous
II. Tractional
III. Exudative
Tractional retinal detachment?
Caused by traction due to vitreal, epiretinal or subretinal membrane pulling the neurosensory retina away from underlying RPE
occur in DR, CRVO, ROP, ocular trauma
Exudative retinal detachment?
Due to damage to RPE resulting in fluid accumulation in subretinal space
Causes: intraocular tumour, posterior uveitis, central serous retinopathy
Clinical features of retinal detachment?
- Floaters
- Flashes of light
- Metamorphosia
- Visual field defect
- Peripheral vision loss
Treatment of retinal detachmet
Rhegmatogenous
- Scleral buckle procedure
- Pneumatic retinoplasty
Tractional
1. Vitrectomy
Exudative
1. Treat underlying cause
